What should you know about gout and elbow bursitis?

Short answer
Gout and elbow bursitis can both swell near the elbow, but gout affects a joint through urate crystals while bursitis inflames the cushioning sac over the elbow tip.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How the two problems differ
Olecranon bursitis affects the fluid-filled bursa over the back of the elbow. Leaning on the elbow, a knock, repeated friction, or infection can irritate this sac, producing a soft or tense lump and pain with pressure or bending. Elbow pain is a symptom with several possible causes, so it does not identify bursitis by itself.
Gout is an inflammatory arthritis caused by urate crystals. When gout involves the elbow, the joint or nearby tissues can become suddenly painful, warm, red, and swollen. Gout can also affect a bursa, meaning the two conditions may overlap. Examination and sometimes fluid analysis help distinguish gout, infection, bleeding, and mechanical irritation.
What you can do
Avoid leaning on the elbow, protect it from repeated knocks, and use a wrapped cold pack for short periods if this is comfortable. Keep the arm moving gently within an easy range, but do not force a swollen joint. A clinician may recommend anti-inflammatory medication after checking your kidney health, stomach history, blood thinners, and other medicines.
If the swelling is substantial or the diagnosis is uncertain, joint aspiration may remove fluid for testing and relief. Recurrent, infected, or persistent bursitis sometimes needs specialist treatment, and bursa removal is considered only in selected situations after other options have been assessed. Never puncture the swelling at home.
When to seek care
Seek prompt care for a hot red swelling, fever, chills, drainage, rapidly increasing pain, or inability to move the elbow. These signs can indicate infected bursitis or a joint infection. Arrange assessment after a fall or direct blow, and seek review if swelling persists, returns repeatedly, or is accompanied by other gout attacks.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the swelling is in the bursa or the joint, whether fluid should be tested for crystals or infection, and which pain medicines are safe for you. If attacks recur, ask about a long-term urate plan and when specialist treatment would be appropriate.

Questions people ask
Can gout cause elbow bursitis?
Gout can inflame a bursa near the elbow, although pressure, injury, and infection can also cause bursitis.
Should I drain an elbow lump myself?
No. Home puncture can introduce infection and may delay testing for gout or another cause.
