What elbow pain can feel like
Elbow pain can come from irritated tendons, a swollen bursa, joint wear, nerve pressure, or an injury, so its pattern and triggers guide assessment.
Elbow pain may sit at the outer point, inner side, back of the joint, or along the forearm. It can feel aching, burning, sharp, or tender to touch. Some people notice pain when gripping, lifting, twisting a door handle, leaning on the elbow, or straightening the arm. Stiffness after rest and reduced strength can occur alongside discomfort. Tingling or numbness in the ring and little fingers suggests that a nearby nerve may be irritated and deserves mention during an assessment.
Is elbow pain urgent?
Arrange prompt medical assessment after a significant fall or blow if the elbow looks deformed, swelling appeared quickly, or you cannot move the arm normally. Seek urgent help for a hot, red, very swollen elbow with fever or feeling unwell, because infection needs timely care. New arm weakness, spreading numbness, or a hand that becomes pale, blue, or unusually cold also needs urgent evaluation. Without these warning signs, persistent or activity-limiting pain still merits a routine appointment.
Conditions that can cause elbow pain
The possible causes below are listed alphabetically, not by likelihood. Cubital Tunnel Syndrome can irritate the ulnar nerve behind the inner elbow, causing tingling into the ring and little fingers. Elbow Osteoarthritis may produce stiffness, aching, and restricted movement as the joint surfaces change. Golfer's Elbow affects the tendon attachment on the inner elbow and can hurt with gripping or wrist movement. Olecranon Bursitis causes swelling over the bony tip, sometimes after repeated pressure. Tennis Elbow involves irritated tendon tissue on the outer elbow and may worsen when lifting or gripping.
How elbow pain is diagnosed
A clinician will ask when the pain began, what activities change it, whether there was an injury, and whether numbness or neck symptoms are present. They may compare both arms, feel the joint and tendon attachments, check elbow and wrist movement, and test grip strength and sensation. An X-ray can help assess bone or joint changes after the examination. Ultrasound or MRI may be considered when tendon, bursa, ligament, or other soft-tissue detail is needed. Tests are selected according to the examination rather than used automatically.
Treatment depends on the cause
Care may begin with changing the aggravating activity, using a gradual exercise plan, and addressing movement or grip technique. Physiotherapy can improve forearm strength, joint mobility, and load tolerance. A clinician may recommend a brace or night-time elbow positioning when it suits the problem. Medicines or an injection may be discussed after considering your health and diagnosis. Shockwave Therapy or PRP Injection may be options for selected tendon problems; they are not appropriate for every cause. Severe injury, persistent nerve compression, or advanced joint change may need specialist review.
Reducing the chance of recurring elbow pain
Increase repetitive gripping, throwing, or lifting gradually, especially after a period of rest. Keep frequently used tools at a comfortable size and avoid holding the wrist rigid while applying force. Take short movement breaks during desk or manual work, and avoid resting the elbow on a hard edge for long periods. A warm-up before sport and strengthening of the forearm, shoulder, and upper back can improve tolerance. Stop and adjust an activity when pain builds rather than repeatedly pushing through it.
Symptoms that may occur with elbow pain
Notice whether elbow pain comes with swelling, warmth, bruising, clicking, locking, reduced range of motion, grip weakness, or tingling in the hand. The location and combination matter: nerve symptoms differ from tendon tenderness, while fever and marked warmth change the urgency. Record which movements trigger symptoms and whether rest changes them; this gives a clinician useful detail.
Where assessment can lead
An assessment can clarify whether the problem is mainly a tendon, nerve, bursa, joint, or injury-related issue. That distinction helps set a safe activity plan and identifies when imaging, specialist care, or a different treatment is needed. Earlier guidance may prevent protective stiffness and help you return to work, exercise, or everyday lifting in stages.

Questions people ask
Can elbow pain improve without a procedure?
Many activity-related problems are managed with load changes, exercise, and time, but ongoing or worsening symptoms should be assessed to confirm the cause.
When should I arrange an appointment for elbow pain?
Arrange one when pain limits work or sleep, keeps returning, persists despite sensible activity changes, or comes with weakness, numbness, swelling, or reduced movement.
