Good chest X-ray: what to know

A chest X-ray may help identify pneumonia, fluid, lung collapse or other changes. It also gives information about the heart size and the bones visible in the image. A normal-looking image does not explain every cough or breathing problem, so a clinician may consider examination, oxygen readings, blood tests or another scan.

Tell the imaging team if you may be pregnant, and remove jewellery or clothing that could cover the chest. You will usually stand or sit against the X-ray equipment and hold your breath briefly while images are taken. Take the report back to the clinician who requested it so the findings can be interpreted in context.

Seek urgent care for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, new confusion, coughing blood, chest pain or rapidly worsening symptoms. A persistent cough, repeated chest infections, night sweats or unexplained weight loss also deserves medical review; causes can range from airway disease to infection.

Ask what the X-ray was checking, whether the image was adequate, when the report will be reviewed and whether further assessment is needed. Ask how the result relates to your cough, fever or breathing symptoms.
