Short answer

Ginger may soothe nausea for some people with acid reflux, but concentrated products can worsen burning or regurgitation.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How ginger fits with reflux

Acid reflux occurs when stomach contents move back into the oesophagus, causing burning, sour fluid, throat irritation or cough. Ginger is sometimes used for nausea, but its effect on reflux is individual. Fresh ginger in a small food portion may be tolerated, whereas strong tea, shots, supplements or spicy preparations can irritate symptoms or add to stomach discomfort.

Reflux-related cough can resemble Chronic Cough from another cause. Hiatus Hernia and Obesity can contribute to reflux in some people, but symptoms alone cannot identify the underlying reason.

A sensible way to try it

If you want to test ginger, use a small amount with food and keep a symptom diary. Stop if burning, sour taste, abdominal pain or night symptoms increase. Avoid lying down soon after eating, identify meals that trigger symptoms and ask a pharmacist about suitable treatments if symptoms recur. Do not replace prescribed medicine with a supplement without discussing it.

Arrange a clinical review when reflux is frequent, affects sleep or needs repeated self-treatment. Mention swallowing difficulty, weight change, persistent vomiting and any regular pain medicines.

When to seek care

Seek urgent help for chest pressure with breathlessness, sweating, faintness or pain spreading to the arm or jaw, because this may not be reflux. Arrange prompt medical assessment for vomiting blood, black stools, food sticking, repeated vomiting, unexplained weight loss or severe persistent abdominal pain.

Questions for your doctor

Could my symptoms be acid reflux or another condition? Is ginger suitable with my medicines? Should I use a short course of reflux treatment? What symptoms would require testing? Could a hiatus hernia, chronic cough or another factor be contributing?

Questions people ask

Can ginger cure acid reflux?

No. Ginger may ease nausea for some people, but it does not remove the mechanism causing reflux or replace an assessment when symptoms persist.

Can ginger tea make reflux worse?

It can. A strong or concentrated drink may aggravate burning or stomach discomfort, so stop it if symptoms increase.
