What should you know about getting bald spots on head?

A smooth patch with normal-looking skin can be seen with alopecia areata. Scale, broken hairs, black dots, itching, tenderness, or crusting point more toward scalp ringworm or another scalp disorder. Hair loss along the margins can follow tight braids, extensions, or repeated pulling. Shiny skin with fewer visible follicle openings may suggest scarring.

The location, speed of change, symptoms, and hair-care practices help a clinician decide whether the problem is affecting the hair shaft, follicle, or scalp skin. A bald patch is a symptom, not a diagnosis.

Photograph the area, avoid tight styles and harsh chemicals, and use gentle washing until it is assessed. Do not share brushes, pillows, hats, or towels if there is scale or broken hair, and arrange evaluation for possible infection.

Treatment follows the cause. A hair transplant may be considered only after the scalp condition is understood and stable; it does not treat active infection or inflammation.

Arrange a clinical review for a new or enlarging patch. Seek prompt care for pus, severe tenderness, spreading redness, fever, swollen neck glands, or loss of eyebrows and eyelashes. Rapid widespread loss or breathing difficulty needs urgent medical attention.

Ask what the scalp surface and hair roots suggest, whether a sample is needed, how to prevent spread to household members, which treatment is appropriate, and how regrowth will be monitored.
