GERD and LPR

LPR may cause frequent throat clearing, hoarseness, a lump sensation, cough, excess mucus, or an unpleasant taste. Some people have classic heartburn as well, while others mainly notice throat or voice symptoms. These symptoms also occur with infections, allergies, asthma, voice strain, and other conditions, so they do not by themselves establish reflux as the cause.

A clinician may ask when symptoms occur, whether meals or lying down trigger them, and whether your voice is changing. Persistent hoarseness may require examination of the throat and voice box.

Try smaller meals, remain upright after eating, and avoid lying down soon after food. Reduce personal triggers such as late meals, alcohol, smoking, or foods that reliably worsen symptoms. Sip water instead of repeatedly clearing your throat, which can further irritate the voice box.

Use reflux medicine only as directed by a clinician or pharmacist. Improvement in throat symptoms may take time, and persistent symptoms deserve a review rather than repeated self-treatment.

Seek urgent help for chest tightness with breathlessness, sweating, faintness, or pain spreading to the arm or jaw. Arrange prompt assessment for difficulty swallowing, food sticking, coughing or vomiting blood, black stools, severe pain, breathing difficulty, or hoarseness that persists or worsens.

Ask whether your throat symptoms could be LPR or another condition, whether an ear, nose, and throat examination is needed, and how long to try the recommended plan. Ask which changes should prompt earlier review.
