GERD and a burning throat: what to know

Short answer
GERD may cause a burning throat when stomach contents reach and irritate the throat, especially after meals or lying down.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common triggers
- Meals, bending, and lying down can bring symptoms on.
- Night symptoms
- Staying upright after dinner may reduce backflow.
Why your throat may burn
Reflux can travel above the food pipe and irritate sensitive throat tissues. You may notice a sour taste, hoarseness, repeated throat clearing, cough, or a feeling of a lump. Symptoms often become more noticeable after a large meal, bending forward, or going to bed soon after eating. A burning throat can also result from infection, allergy, dry air, or another condition, so persistent symptoms should not be self-diagnosed as GERD.
What you can try
Keep a brief symptom diary, including foods, meal timing, posture, and night-time symptoms. Eat more slowly, choose smaller portions, remain upright after meals, and avoid lying flat soon after eating. Raising the head end of the bed may help night symptoms. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an antacid or other reflux medicine is appropriate, particularly if you take regular medicines or have other health conditions.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help if throat symptoms come with swelling, sudden breathing difficulty, faintness, or inability to swallow saliva. Arrange prompt assessment for food sticking, painful swallowing, vomiting blood, black stools, unexplained weight loss, or symptoms that keep returning despite treatment. Chest pressure, sweating, or pain spreading to the arm or jaw needs emergency assessment rather than a reflux remedy.
Questions for your doctor
Does the pattern fit reflux or another throat problem? How long should I try treatment? Could my medicines be contributing? Do I need assessment for a hiatus hernia or chronic cough?
