What should you know about GERD and blood in phlegm?

Acid Reflux can inflame the food pipe or throat and may cause a cough. Forceful or repeated coughing can irritate delicate lining and leave a small streak of blood in mucus. Blood may also come from the nose, gums, throat or lungs. Chronic Cough, infection, medication effects and other conditions require consideration.

The amount, colour and source are useful clues, but they cannot establish a diagnosis. Note whether blood appears only after coughing, whether it is mixed with phlegm, and whether you have chest tightness, abdominal pain, fever, breathlessness or trouble sleeping.

Contact a clinician promptly, particularly if this is new or recurring. Bring a medicine list and describe smoking or vaping exposure, recent illness and reflux timing. Avoid smoking and avoid repeatedly clearing your throat. Do not stop prescribed medicines unless a clinician advises it. A clinician may examine the mouth, nose, chest and digestive symptoms before deciding on further tests.

Seek emergency help for more than a trace of blood, repeated bleeding, difficulty breathing, severe chest pain, faintness, confusion, or blue lips. Prompt assessment is needed if blood is accompanied by fever, worsening cough, unexplained weight loss, or significant abdominal pain.
