Gemcitabine and cisplatin are medicines given through a vein under an oncology team's supervision. The schedule is organised into treatment days and recovery time, with blood tests used to decide whether the next dose is appropriate.

Possible effects include tiredness, nausea, reduced appetite, changes in blood counts, kidney strain, hearing changes, and tingling or numbness. Not everyone experiences the same effects. Medicines to prevent nausea and fluids to support the kidneys may be part of care.

Tell your team about kidney problems, hearing symptoms, neuropathy, allergies, pregnancy, and every medicine or supplement you take. Keep the contact number for your oncology unit available. Take anti-sickness medicines exactly as prescribed, drink according to your team's advice, and rest between appointments.

Avoid starting over-the-counter products without checking first. Ask which symptoms should be recorded between visits and whether you need precautions around infection exposure.

Call your oncology team urgently for fever or chills, trouble breathing, uncontrolled vomiting, inability to drink, reduced urination, unusual bleeding, confusion, or sudden worsening weakness. Do not wait for the next treatment visit if these occur.

Ask what the regimen is intended to treat, how each visit will run, which blood tests are needed, how kidney and hearing function will be checked, and whom to contact outside clinic hours.
