What should you know about fusion of neck bones?

Cervical fusion is a spine operation in which a damaged disc or bone is removed when it is contributing to nerve or spinal-cord compression. A spacer is placed between vertebrae, and the bones are supported while they heal together. A PEEK spinal cage may be one spacer option; a plate and screws can help hold the construct in position.

The goal is to relieve pressure and stabilise the affected level, not to restore every movement of that segment. Nearby neck segments continue to move. Cervical radiculopathy and cervical spondylosis are examples of conditions that may be considered in an operation plan, but suitability depends on examination and imaging.

Before surgery, discuss medicines, smoking or nicotine use, diabetes, bone health, and any swallowing or voice problems with the surgical team. Afterward, follow instructions about wound care, neck support, lifting, driving, and exercises. Walking is often introduced early, while heavier activity waits for personalised clearance.

Expect recovery to be gradual. Neck soreness and swallowing discomfort can occur after an anterior approach, while arm pain may improve on a different timetable from neck pain. Attend follow-up visits so healing, symptoms, and activity progression can be reviewed.

After surgery, contact the team promptly for worsening weakness, new numbness, difficulty walking, loss of bladder or bowel control, increasing wound redness or drainage, or fever. Seek emergency help for severe breathing or swallowing difficulty, sudden chest symptoms, or rapidly worsening neurological changes.

Ask which level is being treated, what problem the operation is intended to address, and why fusion is preferred over other approaches. Discuss the planned cage and fixation, likely movement limits, warning signs, rehabilitation, and how healing will be checked.
