What should you know about fungal pneumonia?

Fungal pneumonia may cause cough, fever, chills, tiredness, chest discomfort, breathlessness, or coughing up phlegm. The pattern can resemble viral or bacterial illness, including COVID-19, Influenza, or ordinary Pneumonia. Clinicians may use an examination, oxygen measurement, chest imaging, blood tests, and samples from the airways. They consider immune health, lung conditions, travel or environmental exposure, and how quickly symptoms developed before selecting treatment.

Take prescribed antifungal treatment exactly as directed and tell the clinician about all medicines, allergies, pregnancy, and liver or kidney problems. Rest, drink fluids if you can do so safely, and avoid smoking or smoky air. Do not use leftover antibiotics; they do not treat every cause of pneumonia. Arrange follow-up if cough, fever, or breathlessness is not improving as expected.

Call for urgent medical help if breathing becomes difficult, lips look blue or grey, you cannot stay awake, you become confused, chest pain is severe, or you cannot keep fluids down. Fever with a rapidly worsening condition, fainting, or signs of Sepsis also needs immediate assessment. People with weakened immunity should seek advice early when new respiratory symptoms begin.
