What should you know about FUE hair falling out?

A transplant disturbs the scalp and follicular units, and some visible hairs may shed while the follicles remain in a healing phase. This is different from losing the follicle itself, but only an examination can tell what is happening. Native, non-transplanted hair can also keep thinning if the underlying pattern hair loss is active.

Hair loss has several possible causes. Gradual patterned thinning may fit male or female pattern hair loss; sudden smooth patches can occur with alopecia areata; scalp scale and broken hairs may suggest scalp ringworm. Diffuse shedding after illness, major stress or another body change can fit telogen effluvium, while repeated tight hairstyles can contribute to traction alopecia.

Follow the transplant team’s washing and activity instructions, and avoid scratching, tight hairstyles, harsh chemicals or unapproved remedies. Take dated photographs in consistent lighting so changes can be compared at review. Record whether shedding is diffuse or patchy, whether hairs are breaking, and whether itching, scale, pain or redness is present. Do not start or stop a hair-loss medicine, including finasteride, without discussing its suitability and risks with a clinician.

Contact the clinic promptly for worsening pain, spreading redness, pus, fever, persistent bleeding or marked swelling. Arrange assessment for new smooth bald patches, rapidly expanding loss, significant scale, broken hairs or scalp tenderness. Urgent help is appropriate for breathing difficulty or severe facial swelling. These warning signs are driven by the scalp findings and overall illness, not by how common shedding is after a procedure.

Ask whether the shed hairs are transplanted or native, what pattern your examination suggests, whether the donor area is healing normally, and whether treatment for continuing loss should be considered.
