What should you know about fragrance allergy test?

A suspected fragrance allergy is often assessed with patch testing, in which small amounts of selected substances are placed on the skin under dressings and checked at planned follow-up visits. The test looks for allergic contact dermatitis, a delayed immune reaction. Irritation, eczema, headaches, sneezing, wheeze, and immediate swelling can have different causes and may not be explained by a patch test. A negative result does not prove that every fragranced product is suitable, because products contain different mixtures and labels may use broad terms such as perfume or parfum.

Before testing, describe the product, the body area affected, how long the reaction took to appear, and whether symptoms improved away from it. Bring ingredient lists or photographs when possible. Follow instructions about medicines and skin products before the appointment, because some can affect testing. Until reviewed, avoid the suspected product and choose simple, fragrance-free alternatives; test any new product cautiously on a small area only if your clinician advises it. Reactions involving the nose or eyes can overlap with Allergic Rhinitis or Allergic Conjunctivitis, while wheeze may relate to Asthma.

Call emergency services for trouble breathing, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, or rapidly spreading symptoms, which can indicate Anaphylaxis. Arrange medical review for a rash that is painful, infected-looking, extensive, blistering, or not settling after the suspected exposure stops. A test should be planned by a clinician rather than performed with an unknown home product.
