Fractional laser scar treatment: what to know

Scars differ in depth, colour, firmness, and how far they extend beyond the original injury. Fractional laser can create controlled microscopic columns that encourage remodelling and may soften uneven texture or improve the transition between a scar and nearby skin. It is not suitable for every raised, depressed, red, or actively inflamed mark. A clinician first checks whether the area is fully healed and whether another treatment should address inflammation, firmness, or pigment.

Bring a clear account of how the scar began, how it has changed, and any earlier treatment. Mention a tendency to form raised scars, dark marks after irritation, eczema, cold sores, medicines, and recent sun exposure. Your clinician may recommend a test area or a staged plan. After treatment, cleanse gently, moisturise as directed, avoid picking and friction, and protect the area from sun. Improvement is assessed after healing rather than during the immediate redness or peeling.

Tell the clinic about worsening tenderness, expanding redness, drainage, fever, blistering, or a wound that is not healing. Get urgent help for severe facial swelling or breathing difficulty. Arrange a review for a new raised edge, rapid scar growth, or persistent colour change before having another treatment.

Ask what type of scar you have, which feature the laser is intended to change, and whether an alternative or combined plan is more appropriate. Discuss likely recovery, pigment precautions, the interval between sessions, and how progress will be judged.
