What should you know about a foot MRI scan?

You lie still while the foot is positioned inside the scanner. The machine makes loud tapping sounds, so ear protection is provided. The scan itself does not hurt, but staying still can be difficult. A contrast medicine may be offered through a vein when the radiologist needs to distinguish certain tissues or assess a lesion more clearly.

MRI can show bone marrow changes, stress injury, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, nerves, infection, and soft-tissue masses. It does not automatically identify the cause of every abnormality; the report is interpreted alongside your examination and other tests.

Tell the imaging team about metal fragments, implanted devices, kidney problems, pregnancy, allergies, and anxiety in enclosed spaces. Remove jewellery and other metal items. Follow instructions about eating or drinking, particularly if contrast or sedation is planned. Wear clothing without metal fasteners when possible.

Bring previous images or reports if requested. After the scan, a radiologist reviews the images and sends a report to the clinician who requested it. A biopsy may be needed if imaging cannot establish what a mass is.

An MRI appointment is not a substitute for urgent assessment. Seek prompt care for a cold or pale foot, rapidly worsening swelling, severe pain after an injury, new inability to move the toes, or spreading redness with fever. After contrast, get emergency help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or collapse.
