What should you know about folliculitis pustules?

A pustule may sit on a red, tender bump and can itch or sting. Folliculitis often follows shaving, friction, sweating, tight clothing, or occlusive skin products. Bacteria can be involved, but irritation and other causes can look similar. A cluster in a shaved area may differ from recurring spots on the scalp or beard area. Avoid squeezing because pressure can push inflammation deeper and increase the chance of marks. The appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

Wash gently with lukewarm water, pat dry, and use a clean towel. Pause shaving, waxing, and friction over the affected skin until it settles. Wear loose, breathable clothing and change out of sweaty clothes. Do not share razors, towels, hats, or pillowcases. A clinician may recommend an antiseptic wash, a topical medicine, or antibiotic treatment when an infection is suspected; do not use leftover antibiotics or steroid creams without advice.

Arrange a medical review if pustules keep returning, spread, become increasingly painful, drain heavily, or leave areas of hair loss or scarring. Seek prompt care for fever, rapidly expanding redness, marked swelling, or feeling unwell. A clinician can distinguish folliculitis from acne, an abscess, or another skin problem and choose treatment based on the examination.

Ask whether the spots look infectious or mainly irritated, whether you should stop a particular grooming product, and which cleansing or prescription option suits the body area. Mention recent shaving, sweating, new products, medicines, or repeated episodes.
