What should you know about folliculitis look like?

The bumps may appear singly or in a cluster on areas exposed to shaving, rubbing, sweat, or occlusive clothing. They can be itchy, sore, or mildly burning. Some have a white or yellow centre, while others remain firm and skin-coloured.

Location and timing provide useful clues: a flare after hair removal suggests irritation or ingrown hairs, while recurrent itchy bumps on the trunk may have a different cause. A photograph can help a clinician, but an in-person examination is more reliable when the diagnosis is unclear.

Clean the area gently, keep it dry after sweating, and reduce rubbing from tight clothing or equipment. Pause shaving and waxing over the affected skin. Do not squeeze pustules or use harsh exfoliants, since these can worsen inflammation and leave dark marks.

If the eruption persists, a clinician may recommend a topical medicine or another treatment based on whether bacteria, yeast, irritation, or ingrown hairs are involved. Avoid borrowing prescription creams from someone else.

Seek prompt care when the area becomes rapidly more red, hot, swollen, or painful, when larger pus-filled lumps form, or when fever or feeling unwell accompanies the skin changes. Arrange review for repeated flares, spreading lesions, or scarring.

Ask what features support folliculitis, whether the bumps could be ingrown hairs or another rash, and which products or hair-removal habits should be stopped while the skin heals.
