What should you know about FOLFOX chemo?

FOLFOX combines medicines that interfere with cancer-cell growth in different ways. Oxaliplatin is commonly given through a vein, while fluorouracil may be delivered in the clinic, through a portable pump, or by another schedule chosen by the oncology team. Folinic acid helps fluorouracil work more effectively; it is not the same as a chemotherapy drug on its own.

The regimen may be used for particular digestive-system cancers and in other situations selected by specialists. The exact drugs, doses, timing, and duration depend on the cancer, previous treatment, kidney and liver function, blood counts, and general health.

Before each cycle, tell the team about new symptoms, medicines, supplements, dental problems, and any infection exposure. Plan for rest, hydration, gentle meals, and help with transport if fatigue or nausea affects you. Cold sensitivity and tingling are associated with oxaliplatin, so your team may advise avoiding very cold drinks and environments soon after treatment. Report numbness early because it can influence future dosing.

Call your oncology service urgently for fever, chills, a new cough, burning urine, uncontrolled diarrhoea or vomiting, mouth sores that prevent drinking, or bleeding. Seek emergency help for severe breathlessness, chest pain, confusion, collapse, or a sudden allergic reaction during or after an infusion. If you have a pump, follow the emergency instructions for leaks, disconnection, or alarms.
