Flu shot and pneumonia: what to know

Influenza is a viral infection of the airways. In some people, the infection can extend into the lungs or make it easier for another infection to develop, causing pneumonia. Pneumonia can also begin with bacteria, other viruses, or less common causes that a flu vaccine does not target. Vaccination is therefore one part of respiratory protection, not a complete shield against lung infection.

A cough, fever, chills, or coughing up phlegm may occur with pneumonia, influenza, or another illness. The symptom alone cannot identify the cause. A clinician may assess your breathing, oxygen level, medical history, and need for testing.

Ask a healthcare professional whether seasonal flu vaccination is appropriate for you, especially if you are older, pregnant, living with a long-term condition, or caring for someone medically vulnerable. Follow the advice given for the vaccine product and timing. Reduce spread by washing your hands, improving airflow indoors, and staying home when unwell where practical.

If flu-like symptoms develop, rest, drink fluids if you can, and seek advice about symptom relief that fits your health conditions. Do not use leftover antibiotics; they do not treat influenza, and a clinician should decide whether bacterial pneumonia is possible.

Seek urgent medical help for severe difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, new confusion, fainting, or chest pain that is severe or persistent. Get prompt clinical advice for worsening fever, increasing breathlessness, dehydration, or a cough that is bringing up blood. Pneumonia can become serious, particularly in people with reduced immunity or significant heart or lung disease.

Ask whether you need flu vaccination, whether another vaccine is relevant to your age or health, and which symptoms should prompt same-day assessment. Mention prior vaccine reactions, current medicines, pregnancy, allergies, and any lung or immune condition.
