What should you know about a fit chest X-ray?

A chest X-ray is a quick image of the chest used to check the lungs, heart, and surrounding structures.

What it can show
The image may help clinicians investigate cough, breathlessness, chest pain, fever, or an abnormal examination. It can show changes linked with pneumonia, tuberculosis, bronchiectasis, fluid, or other lung and heart findings. A normal image does not explain every symptom, and an unexpected finding does not by itself establish a diagnosis. The clinician combines the image with your history and examination.
How to prepare
Usually you can eat and drink normally. Tell the imaging team if you might be pregnant, and remove jewellery or clothing that could obscure the chest. You may be asked to stand or sit against the X-ray equipment, take a deep breath, and hold it briefly while the image is taken. Follow any instructions from the requesting clinician.
When to seek care
Do not wait for a routine X-ray appointment if you develop severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, confusion, coughing blood, or crushing chest pain. Seek urgent care for these symptoms. Contact the requesting clinician if symptoms worsen or continue after the image, because further assessment may still be needed.

Why has the X-ray been requested? What symptoms or finding is it checking? When will the result be explained? Could I need a repeat image, tuberculosis screening, or another test?
