What should you know about your first MRI scan?

The radiographer checks your safety information, then positions you on a moving table. The table slides into a short tunnel in the MRI scanner. The machine makes loud tapping and knocking sounds, so you receive hearing protection. You can speak with the team and usually have an alert device to signal if you need help.

Some scans use a contrast medicine through a vein to make particular tissues easier to distinguish. The choice depends on the clinical question and your health history. An MRI can help assess areas such as the brain, spine, joints, or organs, but the images need a radiologist's report and do not by themselves provide a final diagnosis.

Tell the imaging team about metal fragments, implanted devices, clips, pumps, hearing devices, kidney problems, pregnancy, allergies, and previous reactions to contrast. Remove metal objects and follow instructions about food, drink, or medicines. Wear clothing without metal fasteners when possible.

Practise slow breathing if enclosed spaces make you uneasy. Ask whether a wider scanner, music, a support person, or medicine for anxiety is available. Keep still during each image sequence; movement can blur pictures and lead to repeat images.

Tell staff immediately if you feel unwell during the scan, develop breathing difficulty, feel faint, or have severe discomfort. After contrast, seek prompt advice for a widespread rash, facial swelling, or breathing difficulty. Follow the imaging centre's instructions for delayed symptoms.

What body area will be scanned, and will contrast be needed? How long should I expect to lie still? Which implants or previous procedures must I disclose, and when will the report be available?
