What should you know about FFA hair loss?

Short answer

FFA hair loss, or frontal fibrosing alopecia, can gradually move the frontal hairline back and thin the eyebrows; early dermatology assessment helps identify inflammation and discuss ways to protect remaining follicles.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What FFA hair loss means

Frontal fibrosing alopecia is a scarring type of hair loss. Inflammation around a follicle can damage it and leave a smoother, less hair-bearing strip along the front or sides of the scalp. The hairline may look paler, and short, fine hairs can appear near its edge. Eyebrow thinning or loss may happen before, alongside, or after scalp changes. Some people also notice itch, tenderness, redness, or small bumps around the hairline.

FFA is not the same as every form of shedding or gradual thinning. A clinician may examine the scalp and eyebrows with magnification and may take a small skin sample when the diagnosis is uncertain. Other patterns, including alopecia areata, pattern hair loss, telogen effluvium, traction alopecia, or scalp ringworm, can need different care.

What you can do

Arrange a dermatology appointment if the hairline is changing, the eyebrows are becoming sparse, or the skin feels itchy or sore. Bring a list of medicines, supplements, hair products, and recent illnesses, and show older photographs if they help reveal how quickly the pattern changed. Avoid tight hairstyles, repeated pulling, harsh chemical treatments, and vigorous scratching while you wait.

Treatment is individualised. A dermatologist may discuss anti-inflammatory treatment applied to the skin, injections, or medicines taken by mouth, depending on examination findings and your health history. The aim is often to calm active inflammation and limit further follicle damage; hair that has been replaced by scar tissue may not regrow. Cosmetic options can be considered after the condition is assessed and stable.

When to seek care

Book a timely appointment for a receding band at the hairline, eyebrow loss, or persistent scalp redness, bumps, burning, itch, or tenderness. Seek prompt medical advice if hair loss is accelerating, affects eyelashes or other body hair, or comes with scaling, broken hairs, pus, marked pain, or swollen areas, because infection or another active scalp problem may require different treatment. Sudden widespread shedding, or hair loss accompanied by feeling unwell, also deserves assessment.

Questions for your dermatologist

Ask: Do my hairline and eyebrow changes fit FFA, or could another condition explain them? Is there evidence that inflammation is active? Would magnified examination or a biopsy help? What benefits and side effects should I expect from the treatment options? How should I monitor the hairline between visits, and which hairstyles or products should I avoid?

Questions people ask

Can FFA hair loss regrow?

Hair may regrow where follicles remain active, but a follicle replaced by scar tissue may not produce hair again. Treatment focuses on controlling active inflammation and protecting remaining follicles.

Is FFA the same as female pattern hair loss?

No. FFA is a scarring inflammatory pattern that often affects the frontal hairline and eyebrows, while female pattern hair loss usually causes gradual thinning over the top of the scalp. A dermatologist can assess whether one or both patterns are present.

Should I stop styling my hair?

Avoid styles that pull on the hairline, frequent chemical processing, and rough handling. Gentle care reduces added traction while the underlying hair loss is being assessed.
