Causes of fever with chills

Chills may accompany the body’s response to infection. Keep a safe distance from others if a contagious infection is possible. Do not use leftover antibiotics or delay assessment because the fever temporarily settles; treatment depends on the source.

Call emergency services for severe breathing difficulty, confusion, fainting, seizure, blue lips, or inability to stay awake. Seek urgent medical assessment for a stiff neck, severe headache, severe abdominal or flank pain, repeated vomiting, dehydration, unusual bleeding or bruising, or rapid deterioration.
