Fever, headache and light sensitivity: what to know

Light sensitivity means that ordinary light feels uncomfortable or worsens symptoms. Migraine can cause headache and light sensitivity, sometimes with nausea or visual symptoms, but fever is not a typical feature and may point to an accompanying illness. Conjunctivitis can make light uncomfortable when the eye is red, watery or gritty. Meningitis is a serious possibility when fever and headache occur with a stiff neck, confusion, vomiting, unusual sleepiness or a new rash. The symptom pattern, speed of onset and examination of the eyes and nervous system help guide care.

Rest in a dim, quiet room and reduce screen brightness. Sip fluids and avoid driving if light or pain affects your vision or concentration. Note whether the headache began suddenly, whether neck movement hurts, and whether there is eye redness, discharge or a rash. Use a familiar pain or fever medicine only if it is suitable for you and follow the label. Avoid using someone else’s prescription migraine medicine or eye drops.

Get emergency help for a sudden severe headache, stiff neck, confusion, fainting, seizure, repeated vomiting, weakness, difficulty speaking, trouble breathing or a new rash with fever. Seek urgent eye assessment for severe eye pain, reduced vision, marked redness or halos around lights. Prompt review is also needed when the headache is new, rapidly worsening or unlike previous migraines.

Ask whether your symptoms fit migraine, an eye problem or an infection, and whether you need examination or testing for meningitis. Mention contact lens use, recent illness, medicines, pregnancy and any neurological symptoms. Clarify which pain relief and warning signs apply to you.
