What should you know about a female chest X-ray procedure?

You may be asked to remove clothing, jewellery or an underwired bra that could appear on the image. The radiographer positions you against the imaging plate and asks you to keep still and hold your breath briefly while each image is taken. Usually, images are taken from more than one direction.

The images can help clinicians assess the lungs, heart size and the bones of the chest. A clinician may request one when symptoms such as a persistent cough, fever, chest discomfort or breathlessness need assessment. Findings can sometimes support evaluation for Pneumonia, Tuberculosis or Bronchiectasis, but an X-ray does not explain every symptom and may be followed by another test.

Tell the imaging team if you are pregnant, might be pregnant, or are breastfeeding. Do not stay silent because the team can discuss whether the examination is appropriate and how to protect you. Follow the appointment instructions, wear simple clothing and bring details of medicines and relevant symptoms. After the images, you can normally return to usual activities unless your clinician gives different advice.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for new or worsening breathlessness, chest pain, blue lips, confusion, coughing blood or a high fever. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, fainting or pressure-like chest pain. If an X-ray was ordered for a Chronic Cough, ask how and when you will receive the report rather than assuming a normal-feeling day rules out a problem.

Ask what question the X-ray is intended to answer, whether you need more than one view, when the report will be available, and what symptoms should trigger urgent review. You can also ask whether GP Consultation or Tuberculosis Screening is the next step if the result does not explain your symptoms.
