What should you know about feline asthma triggers?

A sensitive cat’s airways may react when irritating particles or fumes are inhaled. The airway lining can swell, muscles around the airways can tighten, and mucus may increase. This may lead to coughing, wheezing, faster breathing, or visible effort. Triggers vary between cats, and a flare can occur after exposure rather than immediately. Allergens such as dust or mites may contribute, while smoke and fragrance are common avoidable irritants. A trigger does not prove the cause of every episode, so veterinary assessment remains useful.

Keep a simple diary of episodes, cleaning activities, litter changes, sprays, visitors, and outdoor exposure. Choose low-dust litter and avoid smoking, incense, scented candles, perfume, air fresheners, and aerosol cleaners near the cat. Clean soft furnishings and sleeping areas regularly, using ventilation during cleaning. Change one environmental factor at a time when practical so patterns are easier to recognise. Do not stop prescribed treatment because symptoms improve after an environmental change.

Arrange urgent veterinary care for marked breathing effort, open-mouth breathing, blue or grey gums, weakness, or collapse. Repeated coughing or wheezing should be assessed promptly, especially when episodes are becoming more frequent or lasting longer. Keep the cat calm and move it away from suspected fumes while arranging help; do not force food, water, or unfamiliar medicine during a breathing crisis.
