What should you know about feline asthma treatment?

Asthma narrows and irritates the small airways, which can cause coughing, wheezing, rapid breathing, or a crouched posture. A veterinarian may use inhaled or other prescribed anti-inflammatory treatment to settle swelling. A bronchodilator may be considered when narrowed airways need to open, but it should only be used as directed. An inhaler with a cat-specific spacer can deliver medicine to the lungs; some cats instead need a nebuliser or treatment at a clinic. The plan depends on the cat’s breathing pattern, examination, and response over time.

Give every prescribed medicine exactly as instructed and keep a record of coughing or breathing episodes. Avoid smoke, aerosol sprays, dusty litter, incense, and strong fragrances around the cat. Reduce household dust with regular cleaning and good ventilation, while avoiding products that release irritating fumes. Never give human asthma medicine unless a veterinarian has specifically prescribed it. Follow-up visits help assess control and adjust the plan if symptoms return or treatment becomes difficult.

Seek emergency veterinary care if your cat is struggling to breathe, breathing with its mouth open, has blue or grey gums, collapses, or cannot settle. A sudden severe episode is an emergency even if it improves briefly. Recurrent coughing, wheezing, or chest effort also deserves prompt veterinary assessment because asthma can resemble other lung problems.
