What should you know about feet first MRI scan?

MRI uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed images without x-rays. Entering feet first may feel more comfortable for some people, especially when the area of interest is below the chest. The scanner makes loud tapping or knocking sounds, and image quality depends on keeping still. A brain scan generally requires head-first positioning, so the planned body area determines the direction.

Tell the imaging team about metal fragments, implants, a pacemaker, kidney problems, pregnancy, medication patches, or claustrophobia before scanning. Remove metal objects and follow instructions about food or contrast. Wear comfortable clothing without metal. You can speak with the team during the scan and may receive ear protection; ask about a pause if you become distressed.

Contact the imaging service promptly if you develop a rash, breathing trouble, swelling, or severe dizziness after contrast. Otherwise, most people return to normal activities after a routine scan. Your clinician may combine the images with examination, an MRI Scan report, or a Biopsy when diagnosing a condition; an image alone does not confirm cancer.
