What should you know about feeling generally unwell and tired?

Short answer
Feeling generally unwell and tired can accompany an infection, poor sleep, stress or another health problem, so the pattern and accompanying symptoms guide what to do next.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What this combination can mean
Malaise is a general feeling that something is wrong, often with low energy, aches, reduced concentration or a need for more rest. A Common Cold, Influenza or COVID-19 may cause this with fever, sore throat, cough or body aches. Glandular Fever can cause marked tiredness and swollen glands. Hepatitis A may include tiredness, nausea, abdominal discomfort or yellowing of the skin and eyes. Poor sleep, emotional strain, low food or fluid intake and medication effects can also contribute. The symptom pattern does not identify one condition, so duration and associated signs matter.
What to do at home
Rest, drink regularly and choose simple nourishing meals. Keep activity gentle and increase it gradually as your energy returns. Check your temperature if you feel feverish and note cough, sore throat, pain, bowel changes, urine changes, rash or swollen glands. Avoid driving if fatigue affects alertness. If symptoms follow a respiratory illness, limit close contact while you feel unwell and follow local health advice. Arrange a routine appointment when tiredness persists, keeps returning, or interferes with work, study, sleep or self-care.
When to seek care
Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, new confusion, fainting, blue or grey lips, a seizure, or rapidly worsening illness. Urgent assessment is also needed for a stiff neck with severe headache, inability to keep fluids down, very little urine, severe abdominal pain or yellowing of the eyes. Sepsis can develop with serious infection and may involve profound weakness, confusion, fast breathing or mottled skin. Contact a clinician promptly if fever persists, symptoms worsen after initial improvement, or fatigue is accompanied by unexplained weight loss or night sweats.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your symptoms fit an infection or another cause, whether medicines or sleep may be contributing, and whether an examination or blood tests are appropriate. Share the start date, progression, temperature, sleep quality, appetite, recent travel or illness, and any new symptoms.
