What should you know about face MRI scan?

The scan uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves while you lie still inside the scanner. It can show soft tissues, muscles, salivary glands, nerves, blood vessels and the spaces around the eyes, nose, mouth and jaw. Some examinations use a contrast agent to make selected tissues easier to distinguish. An MRI image can help a clinician assess a lump, swelling, pain, altered sensation or an area seen on another test; the scan alone does not confirm cancer.

The machine makes repeated loud tapping sounds, so hearing protection is provided. The radiographer can communicate with you throughout the examination. Metal implants, fragments, some devices and severe claustrophobia may affect how the scan is arranged.

Tell the imaging team about implants, metal fragments, kidney problems, allergies, pregnancy or a possibility of pregnancy, and any difficulty staying still. Follow the instructions about eating, drinking and medicines. Remove jewellery, watches, cards and other metal items before entering the scan room. During the scan, use the call button if you feel unwell or need a pause; clear images depend on keeping your face and body still.

Arrange medical assessment for a new facial lump, persistent swelling, unexplained numbness, changes in vision, ongoing pain or weakness. Seek urgent help for sudden facial weakness, sudden trouble speaking, a severe new headache, loss of vision, or swelling that interferes with breathing or swallowing. These symptoms need prompt clinical assessment; an MRI appointment should not delay emergency care.

Ask what area will be scanned, whether contrast is planned, what symptoms the scan is intended to investigate, when results will be discussed, and whether another test such as a biopsy is needed.
