Face mites and rosacea: what to know

Demodex mites are tiny organisms that can live in facial hair follicles and oil glands. Rosacea is an inflammatory skin condition with patterns that may include persistent redness, flushing, burning, sensitivity, visible vessels, or acne-like pimples. In some people, mite-related irritation or the skin's response to mites may add to inflammation; in others, the mites are not the main driver. A diagnosis depends on the complete skin pattern, not on assuming that mites explain every facial change.

Use a gentle cleanser, lukewarm water, and a bland moisturiser. Avoid scrubbing, picking, harsh alcohol-based products, and frequent home treatments that can intensify burning or redness. Record triggers such as heat, sunlight, spicy food, or new cosmetics. A dermatologist may discuss prescription treatment, including azelaic acid therapy, when the pattern supports it. IPL photofacial or pulsed dye laser treatment may be considered for selected persistent redness, but these address visible vessels or colour rather than proving a mite cause.

Book an appointment if redness persists, pimples recur, or burning and sensitivity interfere with daily care. Seek prompt medical attention for painful eye symptoms, light sensitivity, blurred vision, or swelling around the eye, because rosacea can involve the eyes. Rapid facial swelling or breathing difficulty needs emergency care.
