What should you know about eyelash regrowth after chemo?

Chemotherapy can temporarily interrupt the growth cycle of hair follicles, including the short hairs along the eyelid. Some people notice sparse lashes, while others lose them during treatment. Regrowth may be uneven and the new lashes may look finer, thicker, lighter, or more curved at first. The pattern depends on the medicines used, the treatment schedule, and individual biology. If treatment continues, new growth may remain limited until the follicles have more time to recover.

Eyelashes help protect the eye from dust and help spread tears. Without them, the eyes may feel dry, gritty, watery, or more sensitive to wind and light. Changes in the eyebrows or scalp hair can happen at the same time, but each hair area can recover on its own schedule.

Keep the eyelid edges clean with the method recommended by your cancer or eye-care team. Avoid rubbing, eyelash extensions, lash lifts, false-lash adhesive, and fragranced products while the skin and eyes are sensitive. Do not use lash-growth products, supplements, or leftover medicines without checking first. Sunglasses can reduce wind and light discomfort, and preservative-free lubricating drops may help if your clinician recommends them. Wash hands before touching the eye and replace old eye makeup rather than sharing it.

Contact your care team promptly for eye pain, increasing redness, sticky discharge, a new rash around the eyelids, marked swelling, or vision that becomes blurred or reduced. Seek urgent help for sudden vision loss, severe pain, or an injury to the eye. These signs may indicate infection, inflammation, or another eye problem rather than ordinary regrowth.
