Eye redness, pain and sensitivity to light: what to know

Redness can reflect irritation or conjunctivitis on the eye surface. Migraine can make light uncomfortable and may occur with headache, nausea or visual symptoms, while the eye itself may appear normal. Other causes involve the cornea or deeper eye tissues, where pain and light sensitivity are more concerning.

A severe headache with fever, stiff neck, confusion or a new rash is a medical emergency because meningitis can present with that pattern. Eye symptoms after trauma, a chemical splash or contact lens use also change the urgency. The symptom combination does not identify one diagnosis by itself.

Rest in a dim room, avoid driving if vision is affected, and remove contact lenses. Do not rub the eye or use leftover prescription drops. Rinse a loose irritant with clean water, but never delay emergency help after a chemical exposure or penetrating injury.

Record when the symptoms began, which eye is affected, any headache or fever, and whether vision has changed. This information helps the clinician decide whether you need an eye examination, general medical review or emergency treatment.

Seek urgent eye care for worsening pain, reduced vision, a cloudy cornea, halos, vomiting, unequal pupils or pronounced light sensitivity. Call emergency services for sudden vision loss, severe eye injury, chemical exposure, or redness with fever and a stiff neck. Contact lens wearers should seek prompt assessment for a painful red eye.

Ask whether the symptoms suggest surface irritation, migraine or inflammation inside the eye, and whether your cornea and vision need specialist examination. Ask what pain relief is suitable and which changes require immediate return.
