Excessive catarrh: causes and helpful steps

Short answer
Excessive catarrh usually reflects extra mucus from the nose or sinuses, often after allergies, infection, irritation, or reflux.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer
Catarrh may feel like mucus at the back of the throat, a blocked nose, throat clearing, or a need to swallow repeatedly. Postnasal drip describes mucus moving from the nose or sinuses into the throat. It can follow a cold, allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, or chronic sinusitis. Acid reflux can also irritate the throat and create a mucus-like sensation.
Understanding the pattern
Clear, watery mucus with sneezing, itching, or exposure to dust, pollen, or other triggers can fit with allergic rhinitis. Facial pressure, reduced smell, nasal blockage, or discoloured discharge may occur with sinus inflammation. A cough caused by mucus draining into the throat is commonly described as postnasal drip; a cough that continues needs its own assessment.
Throat clearing after meals or when lying down can occur with acid reflux. The colour or thickness of mucus alone does not establish the cause. A clinician may ask about duration, fever, breathing, allergies, medicines, and environmental irritants.
Steps that may help
Drink fluids regularly, use a humidified environment if dry air worsens irritation, and avoid smoke or strong fragrances. Saline nasal rinsing may loosen mucus; use a properly prepared or sterile saline solution and clean the device as directed. Gentle nose blowing is preferable to repeated forceful clearing.
If allergies seem involved, a pharmacist can explain suitable treatments and how to use a nasal spray correctly. If symptoms follow meals or worsen when lying down, discuss reflux measures with a clinician. Do not use decongestant sprays for longer than their label advises, because overuse can worsen blockage.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help for catarrh with severe breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or tongue, confusion, or inability to swallow saliva. Get prompt medical advice for coughing blood, severe facial swelling, severe headache with fever, or a stiff neck.
Arrange a clinical review if mucus, throat clearing, nasal blockage, or cough persists, keeps returning, or interferes with sleep. Also seek advice when symptoms are mainly on one side, your sense of smell remains reduced, or treatment from a pharmacist has not helped.
Questions for your doctor
Ask: Does my symptom pattern fit allergy, sinus inflammation, postnasal drip, or reflux? Could an inhaled medicine or another medicine be irritating my throat? Do I need an examination of my nose and throat? What changes should prompt urgent care, and how long should I try the recommended treatment?
