What should you know about emergency MRI scan?

You lie on a movable table that enters the MRI scanner. The machine makes loud knocking sounds, so headphones or ear protection are provided. You need to keep still, and the scan may include several image sequences. A contrast agent may be offered through a vein to make certain tissues easier to see. Tell the team about kidney problems, allergies, pregnancy, implanted devices, metal fragments, or severe difficulty lying still before entering the scanner.

An urgent MRI can examine the brain, spine, joints, or soft tissues when detailed images could change immediate care. The scan produces images; it does not by itself establish a cancer diagnosis. If a suspicious area is seen, the team may discuss a biopsy or other tests. Symptoms such as a new seizure, sudden weakness, or loss of bladder control require emergency assessment regardless of the eventual scan result.

Remove jewellery, watches, cards, hearing aids, and other metal items as instructed. Wear the provided clothing if asked. Tell staff if you have a pacemaker, clips, pumps, or other implants; some are compatible with MRI only under specified conditions. Follow instructions about food, drink, and medicines, especially if sedation is planned.

During the scan, you can communicate with the team and may hold an alert device. If noise, enclosed spaces, or pain makes stillness difficult, say so before the scan begins. After contrast or sedation, follow the service’s instructions and arrange help home when required.

Seek emergency help for sudden weakness, facial drooping, new confusion, a seizure, severe headache with vomiting, loss of consciousness, or new difficulty speaking or breathing. After contrast, urgent help is needed for facial swelling, wheezing, or trouble breathing. Do not delay emergency treatment while waiting for a routine scan appointment.
