Emergency inhaler for asthma: what to know

A reliever inhaler delivers medicine that relaxes tightened airway muscles, helping air move more freely. It is used according to your personal asthma action plan, with a spacer when advised. Frequent symptoms, night waking, or needing the reliever more often can mean your regular treatment needs review; the inhaler does not remove the underlying airway inflammation or every possible trigger.

Wheezing, Cough, and Chest Tightness can occur during an asthma flare, but similar symptoms can have other causes. Allergic Rhinitis and House Dust Mite Allergy may worsen symptoms in some people, so share suspected triggers with your clinician.

Stop the activity, sit upright, and follow your written asthma plan. Use your reliever exactly as prescribed and check the inhaler technique, including the breath timing and spacer steps. Move away from a known trigger if possible. Do not use another person’s inhaler or keep repeating doses beyond your plan while delaying help.

Arrange a review if the inhaler is needed repeatedly, symptoms return quickly, or you are unsure whether the device is empty. A Nebuliser Treatment may be considered by clinicians in urgent settings, but it is not a substitute for emergency assessment.

Call emergency services if breathing is very difficult, you cannot speak comfortably, your lips look blue or grey, you become exhausted or confused, or the reliever is not helping as your plan predicts. Do not drive yourself during severe breathlessness. Keep using the action plan while waiting for help.

Ask which inhaler is your reliever, how many puffs and at what intervals your plan allows, when to start emergency help, and how to check technique. Ask whether persistent Cough or symptoms between flares need a different controller plan.
