Eczema and Bleeding Hands
Updated

Short answer
Bleeding hands with eczema often result from deep cracks in inflamed, dry skin and need gentle cleaning, protection, moisturising, and assessment when severe.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common mechanism
- Dry inflammation creates fissures that open with movement
- First response
- Clean gently, apply pressure, and cover the crack
How cracks develop
Hand eczema can weaken the skin barrier, while frequent washing, detergents, solvents, wet work, cold air, and friction remove protective oils. Bending the fingers then pulls open fissures, commonly around knuckles, fingertips, and nail edges. Itching may lead to scratching. Bleeding does not establish the exact type of eczema, and infection can occur when the barrier is open.
What to do after a crack opens
Wash your hands gently with lukewarm water, apply firm gentle pressure with clean gauze until bleeding stops, and cover the area with a clean dressing. Once protected, apply a bland ointment or moisturiser around the wound as tolerated. Wear suitable protective gloves for wet or chemical tasks, with a soft layer underneath when practical, and replace damp gloves promptly. Avoid picking loose skin.
When urgent review is needed
Seek prompt care if bleeding does not stop with sustained pressure, the wound is deep, movement is limited, or the hand becomes increasingly red, hot, swollen, painful, or produces pus. Fever or red streaking also warrants urgent assessment. Recurrent bleeding needs review to identify triggers and treatment.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether this is hand eczema or another condition, how to protect fissures at work, which moisturiser or medicine to use, and whether infection or contact allergy needs checking.

Questions people ask
Can eczema cause bleeding on the hands?
Yes. Inflamed, dry skin can split into fissures that bleed when the fingers move or the area is rubbed.
Should you cover bleeding eczema?
After gentle cleaning and pressure to stop bleeding, a clean dressing can protect the crack from friction and contamination.
