Eczema and Bleeding Hands

Hand eczema can weaken the skin barrier, while frequent washing, detergents, solvents, wet work, cold air, and friction remove protective oils. Bending the fingers then pulls open fissures, commonly around knuckles, fingertips, and nail edges. Itching may lead to scratching. Bleeding does not establish the exact type of eczema, and infection can occur when the barrier is open.

Wash your hands gently with lukewarm water, apply firm gentle pressure with clean gauze until bleeding stops, and cover the area with a clean dressing. Once protected, apply a bland ointment or moisturiser around the wound as tolerated. Wear suitable protective gloves for wet or chemical tasks, with a soft layer underneath when practical, and replace damp gloves promptly. Avoid picking loose skin.

Seek prompt care if bleeding does not stop with sustained pressure, the wound is deep, movement is limited, or the hand becomes increasingly red, hot, swollen, painful, or produces pus. Fever or red streaking also warrants urgent assessment. Recurrent bleeding needs review to identify triggers and treatment.
