What cracked skin can feel like
Cracked skin develops when a weakened or very dry skin barrier splits, sometimes causing soreness or bleeding.
A fissure may look like a fine line at first, then deepen with movement or pressure. It can sting during washing, feel tight after bathing, or catch on fabric. Hands, fingertips, knuckles, feet and heels are frequent sites because they face repeated friction, water exposure or weight-bearing.
When to arrange prompt care
Arrange prompt medical advice if a crack becomes increasingly red, warm, swollen, very painful, or produces pus. Seek urgent care for spreading redness, fever, red streaks, or a deep wound that will not stop bleeding. People with diabetes, reduced sensation, circulation concerns or immune suppression should have new foot cracks assessed early, especially when the surrounding skin changes.
Conditions that can be associated with fissures
Cracking can occur with several skin conditions and with environmental irritation. The following list is alphabetical, not a ranking of what explains a particular person’s skin. Atopic dermatitis can leave skin dry and itchy; hand eczema may follow repeated wet work or contact with irritants; psoriasis can form thicker scaly areas that split; and heel skin can fissure when it becomes dry or under pressure.
How the cause is assessed
A clinician will examine the location, depth and edges of the cracks, as well as nearby scaling, rash or signs of infection. They may ask about itching, new soaps or gloves, work involving frequent handwashing, footwear, existing skin disease and medicines. Testing is not needed for every fissure, but a swab or other assessment may be used when infection or another diagnosis is suspected.
Treatment depends on what is driving the split
Barrier care is often part of treatment: a bland moisturising ointment or cream can reduce water loss, and protective dressings may shield a painful fissure. Emollient therapy can be useful when dryness is a major factor. A clinician may also prescribe treatment for inflammation, thick scale or infection after examining the area. Do not cut away thick skin or use strong medicated products on deep, open cracks without professional advice.
Protecting the skin barrier
Use lukewarm water, choose a gentle cleanser, and apply moisturiser while skin is still slightly damp. For hands, dry carefully between fingers and wear suitable protective gloves for wet or chemical tasks, removing them when the task ends. For feet, dry between toes, use well-fitting shoes, and check soles and heels regularly if sensation is reduced. Avoid picking at peeling skin because it can extend a split.
Symptoms worth noting
Itching, flaking, thickened skin, pain, bleeding and burning can help describe the problem. Mention whether cracks appear only in one area, return after a particular exposure, or are accompanied by blisters, nail changes or a spreading rash. These details can help distinguish a dry-skin fissure from an inflammatory or infectious process.
Why persistent fissures deserve attention
A split in the skin creates an opening that can become more painful with use and may allow infection to develop. Repeated cracking can make everyday tasks, walking or exercise uncomfortable. Addressing both the wound and the reason the skin barrier keeps failing helps reduce further breaks.

Questions people ask
Should I moisturise cracked skin?
A bland moisturiser can support the skin barrier, particularly after washing. Deep, painful or infected-looking cracks need clinical advice alongside home care.
Can cracked skin become infected?
Yes. Increasing pain, warmth, swelling, pus, spreading redness or fever can signal infection and should be assessed promptly.
