When does ectopic pregnancy occur?

It can begin after conception and may first feel like a normal early pregnancy. The pregnancy cannot develop safely in a fallopian tube or another location outside the uterus. Risk can be higher when a tube has been affected by pelvic inflammatory disease, previous tubal surgery, or an earlier ectopic pregnancy, although it can occur without a known risk factor.

A missed period, one-sided pelvic pain, light vaginal bleeding, shoulder-tip pain, or dizziness can occur. Symptoms may change quickly, so absence of bleeding does not rule it out. A clinician may use pregnancy hormone blood tests and a transvaginal ultrasound to establish where the pregnancy is located.

If you have a positive pregnancy test with pelvic pain or unusual bleeding, contact a maternity or urgent-care service promptly. Tell the clinician when your last period began, whether pain is on one side, and any history of pelvic inflammatory disease or tubal procedures. Assessment may involve repeat hormone testing and a transvaginal ultrasound.

Seek emergency care for sudden or worsening abdominal or pelvic pain, fainting, marked weakness, shoulder-tip pain, or heavy vaginal bleeding. These symptoms can signal internal bleeding from a ruptured ectopic pregnancy and need immediate assessment. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint.

Ask where the pregnancy is located, whether repeat blood tests or imaging are needed, and which warning signs should bring you back urgently. If treatment is required, ask whether medication or surgery such as salpingectomy is appropriate and how follow-up will be arranged.
