What should you know about ectopic pregnancy what happens?

After fertilisation, the pregnancy implants outside the uterine cavity, most often in a fallopian tube. As the tissue grows, it can stretch the tube and cause one-sided pelvic pain or vaginal bleeding. If the tube ruptures, internal bleeding may cause sudden pain, shoulder-tip pain, dizziness, or fainting.

A pelvic pain symptom does not by itself establish an ectopic pregnancy because other pelvic conditions can feel similar. Clinicians combine your history and examination with pregnancy hormone testing and ultrasound.

A transvaginal ultrasound may locate the pregnancy or show signs that need further review. When the picture is not yet clear, repeat blood tests and imaging can help. The team will consider symptoms, scan findings, hormone results, and general health before recommending a plan.

Some people are monitored closely, while others receive medicine to stop pregnancy tissue growing. Surgery may be needed if there is bleeding, a rupture, or medicine is unsuitable. A salpingectomy removes the affected fallopian tube; your clinician can explain other surgical options and follow-up.

Go to emergency care for severe or rapidly increasing abdominal or pelvic pain, fainting, collapse, shoulder-tip pain, heavy bleeding, extreme dizziness, or weakness with clammy skin. These may be signs of internal bleeding. Do not wait for a scheduled scan or appointment if these symptoms appear.

Ask what the scan and hormone results show, whether observation is appropriate, and why medicine or surgery is being considered. Clarify warning symptoms, follow-up appointments, activity guidance, emotional support, and when it may be medically reasonable to plan another pregnancy.
