What should you know about ectopic pregnancy us?

Short answer
An ultrasound for suspected ectopic pregnancy looks for the pregnancy location and signs of bleeding, but results must be interpreted with symptoms and hormone testing.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main purpose
- Locate the pregnancy
- Other finding assessed
- Pelvic fluid that may indicate bleeding
- If unclear
- Repeat imaging and hormone follow-up
What can the scan show?
A transvaginal ultrasound uses a slender probe placed in the vagina to create detailed images of the uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, and nearby pelvic structures. The clinician looks for a pregnancy inside the uterus, a pregnancy outside it, or fluid that could represent bleeding. Early in pregnancy, the scan may not yet show a clear location.
Pelvic pain or bleeding can occur for several reasons. A scan finding is therefore assessed alongside the pregnancy history, examination, and blood tests rather than used in isolation.
How should you prepare and follow up?
Tell the imaging team about pain, bleeding, previous ectopic pregnancy, pelvic inflammatory disease, or surgery. You may be asked to empty your bladder for an internal scan. If the first scan is uncertain, clinicians may repeat the scan and measure pregnancy hormone levels over time.
If an ectopic pregnancy is confirmed, treatment may be monitoring, medicine, or surgery. A salpingectomy is an operation that removes a fallopian tube and is one possible surgical approach when clinically appropriate. Follow-up is part of every treatment plan.
Do not wait for a scan if symptoms are severe
Seek emergency care immediately for sudden intense pelvic or abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, collapse, heavy bleeding, severe dizziness, or profound weakness. Those symptoms can reflect internal bleeding. An appointment for ultrasound should not delay emergency assessment when your condition is rapidly worsening.
Useful scan questions
Ask whether the scan is transvaginal, what structures were seen, whether the pregnancy location is definite, and whether fluid or bleeding is present. Ask when to repeat imaging, which symptoms need emergency help, and how the scan affects treatment choices.

Questions people ask
Can an ultrasound miss an ectopic pregnancy?
A very early pregnancy may not be visible or its location may remain uncertain. Repeat assessment can clarify the picture.
Is a transvaginal ultrasound painful?
It may feel uncomfortable or create pressure, but tell the clinician if you have pain so they can pause and adjust the examination.
