What should you know about ectopic pregnancy type?

A tubal pregnancy develops in a fallopian tube. Less commonly, implantation can occur near the cervix, in an ovary, in the abdominal cavity, or within a previous caesarean-section scar. The location affects monitoring and treatment choices. A history of pelvic inflammatory disease can damage the tubes and is one factor clinicians consider; it does not prove that an ectopic pregnancy is present.

Early symptoms may include a missed period, pregnancy symptoms, one-sided pelvic pain, or vaginal bleeding. A pelvic pain symptom can have many causes, so it should be assessed in context rather than treated as a diagnosis.

Assessment commonly combines a pregnancy test, repeated blood tests that measure pregnancy hormone changes, and an ultrasound. A transvaginal ultrasound can show the uterus, tubes, ovaries, and surrounding pelvis more clearly than an abdominal scan in early pregnancy. Sometimes the location is not visible at the first visit, so follow-up testing is arranged.

Treatment may involve careful monitoring, medicine that stops pregnancy tissue growing, or surgery. A salpingectomy removes a fallopian tube and may be considered when the tube is badly damaged or bleeding is suspected.

Seek emergency help for sudden or severe pelvic or abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, marked dizziness, weakness, heavy vaginal bleeding, or feeling cold and clammy. These signs can indicate internal bleeding. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint. If you have a positive pregnancy test with pain or bleeding, contact an urgent maternity or emergency service promptly, even if the symptoms are mild.
