Ectopic pregnancy salpingectomy: what to know

Short answer
A salpingectomy removes a fallopian tube containing an ectopic pregnancy and requires follow-up until treatment is confirmed complete.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer
A salpingectomy removes the affected fallopian tube when an ectopic pregnancy is located there. It is usually performed with keyhole surgery when the situation is suitable, although open surgery may be needed during urgent treatment. The pregnancy cannot continue safely in the tube.
What the operation means
The surgeon removes the tube containing the pregnancy and checks for bleeding. The remaining tube and ovary are generally left in place when possible. Fertility after surgery depends on the health of the remaining tube, ovulation, and other personal factors; removal of one tube does not automatically prevent a future pregnancy.
Before treatment, a transvaginal ultrasound and blood tests may help locate the pregnancy and guide the plan. Pelvic inflammatory disease can affect the fallopian tubes and is worth mentioning in your history.
After treatment
Arrange the follow-up recommended by your surgical team. Keep the wounds clean and follow instructions about bathing, driving, lifting, exercise, and sex. Tiredness and abdominal discomfort can occur while healing, but symptoms should gradually settle. Emotional recovery may take longer than physical healing, and pregnancy loss can bring grief, anxiety, or numbness.
Ask when you can try for pregnancy again, whether your blood group requires anti-D treatment, and how an early future pregnancy will be checked. Keep discharge information available and take prescribed medicines as directed.
When to seek urgent care
Seek emergency care for sudden or worsening abdominal or pelvic pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, marked dizziness, heavy vaginal bleeding, breathing difficulty, or feeling very unwell. After surgery, contact the treating team promptly for fever, increasing redness or discharge from a wound, persistent vomiting, or pain that is not controlled.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which tube was affected, whether the other tube looks healthy, what follow-up confirms resolution, and what symptoms should prompt immediate review. You can also ask about an early scan in a future pregnancy and support after pregnancy loss.
