Ectopic pregnancy pathophysiology: how it develops

How the structures involved in Ectopic Pregnancy differ from normal

Short answer

Ectopic pregnancy pathophysiology involves a fertilised egg implanting outside the uterus, most often in a fallopian tube, where growth can damage surrounding tissue.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What happens in the body

After fertilisation, the early pregnancy normally travels through a fallopian tube toward the uterus. In an ectopic pregnancy, movement or implantation is altered, so the pregnancy settles in a place that cannot support normal growth. A fallopian tube has limited space and does not expand like the uterus. As the pregnancy grows, the tube may stretch, bleed or tear. Previous pelvic inflammation, including Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, can affect the tube and make passage more difficult. A symptom such as pelvic pain can have several causes; a pelvic pain presentation can occur with ectopic pregnancy, but pain alone cannot confirm the diagnosis.

What to do next

If pregnancy is possible and you have one-sided pelvic pain or unusual bleeding, arrange prompt medical assessment. Clinicians commonly combine a pregnancy test, blood testing and a Transvaginal Ultrasound to locate the pregnancy and assess its development. Treatment depends on symptoms, examination findings and scan results. Options may include close monitoring, medicine or surgery. A Salpingectomy removes an affected fallopian tube when surgery is needed; your clinician can explain why a particular option fits your situation.

When to seek urgent care

Go to emergency care immediately for sudden or worsening abdominal or pelvic pain, fainting, marked weakness, shoulder-tip pain, heavy bleeding or trouble breathing. These signs can indicate internal bleeding after tubal damage. Do not wait for a scheduled appointment if you feel dizzy or collapse; have someone call emergency services and avoid driving yourself.

Questions for your doctor

Ask where the pregnancy appears to be located, what the blood tests and ultrasound show, which treatment choices are suitable, and how follow-up will confirm that the pregnancy has resolved.

Questions people ask

Can an ectopic pregnancy move into the uterus?

Once implantation has occurred outside the uterus, it cannot be moved safely into the uterus. Medical care focuses on preventing bleeding and protecting your health.

Does pelvic pain prove an ectopic pregnancy?

No. Pelvic pain has many possible causes. When pregnancy is possible, it needs assessment because ectopic pregnancy can present with pelvic pain.
