What should you know about ectopic pregnancy location?

Short answer

An ectopic pregnancy most often lies in a fallopian tube, but it can implant elsewhere outside the womb and needs prompt assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Where implantation may occur

The usual location is a fallopian tube, the passage between an ovary and the womb. Less commonly, implantation can occur near the cervix, in an ovary, or elsewhere in the abdomen. Location matters because different tissues have different capacity to stretch and different patterns of bleeding. [Ectopic Pregnancy](/conditions/ectopic-pregnancy/) describes the condition as a whole; [Pelvic Pain](/symptoms/pelvic-pain/) is one symptom that may accompany it.

Symptoms cannot reliably show the exact location. Pain may be on one side, central, or spread through the abdomen. Previous [Pelvic Inflammatory Disease](/conditions/pelvic-inflammatory-disease/) can damage the tubes and is part of a clinician's history-taking.

How location is found

Clinicians combine your symptoms and examination with pregnancy hormone blood tests and a [Transvaginal Ultrasound](/treatments/diagnostics-and-imaging/transvaginal-ultrasound/). An early scan may not show a clear location, so repeat testing or scanning can be needed. Treatment may include close observation, medicine, or an operation, depending on the location, size, hormone pattern, symptoms, and signs of bleeding. A [Salpingectomy](/treatments/gynaecological-surgery/salpingectomy/) is an operation involving an affected fallopian tube.

When location becomes urgent

Get emergency help for sudden worsening abdominal pain, fainting, severe dizziness, shoulder-tip pain, weakness, confusion, or heavy vaginal bleeding. These warning signs can reflect internal bleeding regardless of where the pregnancy implanted. Do not wait for a scheduled scan if you become suddenly unwell.

Questions for your appointment

Ask what the scan shows, whether the pregnancy has been seen inside the womb or elsewhere, whether repeat testing is needed, and how bleeding risk changes with the suspected location. Ask what symptoms should take you straight to emergency care.

Questions people ask

Can an ultrasound always show the location straight away?

No. Very early pregnancy may be too small to locate, so clinicians may arrange repeat hormone testing or another scan.

Does pain identify which tube is affected?

Pain can suggest a side but cannot confirm the location. Examination and imaging are needed for that decision.
