How do you know if a pregnancy is ectopic?

An ectopic pregnancy may present with a missed period or positive pregnancy test followed by one-sided pelvic or lower abdominal pain, vaginal bleeding, shoulder-tip pain, dizziness or faintness. Some people have few symptoms at first. Pelvic pain is not specific to ectopic pregnancy and can arise from other conditions, including infection or ovarian problems. The combination of possible pregnancy with pain or bleeding is what makes prompt assessment important.

A clinician will ask about your dates, symptoms and medical history, then may arrange pregnancy hormone blood tests and a Transvaginal Ultrasound. One scan may not show the location early on, so repeat testing can be needed. If an ectopic pregnancy is diagnosed, treatment choices can include monitoring, medicine or surgery. A Salpingectomy removes an affected fallopian tube when surgery is needed.

Go to emergency care for sudden intense abdominal pain, fainting, collapse, shoulder-tip pain, heavy bleeding, severe weakness or confusion. These may indicate internal bleeding. If pregnancy is possible and you develop new pelvic pain or bleeding, seek same-day medical advice even if symptoms are manageable.
