Can a home test detect ectopic pregnancy?

An ectopic pregnancy may produce enough pregnancy hormone for a home test to be positive. A positive result therefore confirms that pregnancy hormone is present, not where implantation occurred. A negative result may be too early or inaccurate if the test was used incorrectly. Symptoms remain important: pelvic pain, unusual vaginal bleeding, dizziness or faintness need medical attention even when a home test is negative.

Follow the kit instructions carefully and contact a clinician if the result is positive, unclear or does not fit your symptoms. Tell them the test date, last menstrual period and any pain or bleeding. They may use repeat blood tests and a Transvaginal Ultrasound to establish pregnancy location. Do not use repeated home tests as a substitute for assessment when symptoms are concerning.

Seek emergency care for sudden severe abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, severe weakness, confusion or heavy bleeding. These warning signs can indicate internal bleeding or another emergency and require immediate examination.
