When does ectopic pregnancy happen?

After conception, the early pregnancy normally travels through a fallopian tube into the uterus. If movement is slowed or blocked, implantation may occur in the tube. Previous pelvic infection, including Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, can affect the tubes, but an ectopic pregnancy can also occur without a known risk factor. Early symptoms may resemble a normal pregnancy: a missed period, nausea, breast tenderness or tiredness. One-sided lower abdominal pain or unusual vaginal bleeding needs assessment because a growing pregnancy outside the uterus can damage nearby tissue.

If you could be pregnant and have pain or bleeding, contact a maternity or emergency service promptly. A clinician may use pregnancy hormone blood tests and a Transvaginal Ultrasound to locate the pregnancy and assess internal bleeding. Do not wait for symptoms to become severe or rely on a home test to show where the pregnancy is. Treatment may involve medicine, monitoring or surgery such as Salpingectomy, depending on findings and your health.

Go to emergency care immediately for sudden or severe abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, marked weakness, confusion, or heavy bleeding. These can signal internal bleeding. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint; call emergency services and explain that pregnancy is possible.

Ask where the pregnancy appears to be, whether repeat blood tests or imaging are needed, which treatment is appropriate, and what symptoms should trigger immediate return.
