What does an ectopic pregnancy at four months mean?

By four months, an ectopic pregnancy has continued beyond the stage when its location should be clarified. The uterus is the organ able to support a growing pregnancy; a fallopian tube and other non-uterine sites cannot safely accommodate ongoing growth. The exact dating may be uncertain, so the care team will interpret your history, examination, hormone results and scan together.

A transvaginal ultrasound can help identify the pregnancy location and fluid that may suggest bleeding. Pelvic pain, pressure or vaginal bleeding should not be monitored at home without medical advice.

Call emergency services for sudden intense abdominal or pelvic pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, collapse, severe weakness, confusion, or heavy vaginal bleeding. Internal bleeding can become life-threatening quickly and may occur even when earlier symptoms were limited.
